Other Clubs

Coding Club

The Coding Club is a new addition to the extra curricular activities on offer. It takes place every Wednesday at lunchtime. Students learn the fundamental coding principles through interactive games on code.org, Scratch, and much more. Students have the opportunity to compete in the VeX Robotics Competition. Here, they construct and programme a robot to compete in a specific challenge. They also have the opportunity to take part in coding skills challenges.

Members gain the skills to create their own games and it provides a safe space for them to collaborate with like minded students and develop their digital literacy skills.

Chess Club and Board Games Club

Chess has been a feature of school life in recent years and for those not interested in chess, club members can also play draughts, cards and more unusual games such as ‘Exploding Kittens’, ‘King of Tokyo’ and more recently ‘Parks’. Many students bring in their own games and show others how to play them. Although chess and draughts are the main focus of the club, there are numerous options for all kinds of games.

The club also represents the school in competitions and tournaments with neighbouring schools from Longford/ Westmeath and Cavan. It has members from 1st to 6th yr and takes place after school one evening per week.

Spanish Club

Spanish Club is a great way to promote cultural appreciation and language learning among students. Spanish club engages with students by sharing delicious Spanish snacks, organizing mini quizzes, Spanish movies, Spanish songs etc. Spanish club is held weekly at lunch time. We welcome students from all year groups to take part in fun activities and fun games and to practice conversation.Members learn about Spanish culture and language. It provides a relaxed setting for students to improve their spoken language skills and to become more confident speaking the language with friends. Some of the many activities organised involve quizzes, movies, colouring and flamenco dancing – all through Spanish.

It’s an opportunity to discover a creative talent that you might not know you had. All are welcome. Members of the Craft Club are painting new murals in the common areas.

Equestrian Events

Our Equestrian team competes in the Interschools competition in Mullingar each year. We are fortunate to have a number of students who enjoy horse riding as a hobby. Thanks, as always, to all the parents for bringing the students and their ponies to the competition.

This year, our team, Layla Blessinton, Grace Gannon and Joe Cadam, narrowly missed out on the jump off. We were delighted for Layla Blessington (2nd year) who secured 4th place in the 90cm Novice Individual competition! This was no mean feat as Layla competed against nearly 40 riders from all over the country. This is Layla’s first year competing on the team and we look forward to many more years of her representing Cnoc Mhuire!
